Nigeria On the Rise

Nigeria launched a $500 million loan facility for small and medium-sized businesses last week aimed at supporting economic growth and creating jobs in Africa's most populous nation. Nigeria is performing a tricky juggling act, balancing the need for economic growth while trying to reduce high inflation, which has remained in double digits for more than a year. Also launched was a $200 million fund for the entertainment sector, highlighted as an area with promising prospects for growth and job creation.

Couple Celebrates 76 years of Marriage

This last week was Thanksgiving and this reminded me how much I have to be thankful for. I wanted to find a positive up lifting story; I found this story of two people who are still heads over heels for each other in love after 76 years of marriage. The Canadian couple feel in love over music and with each other. They got married in 1934 and have had good times and bad times. This video just reminded me how much a strong, loving, and long relationship is not seen as much in this day in age.

Gay Dance Party???

An Australian High School that banned a student from bringing her girlfriend to her school dance insisted that it was due to the girls age and not the sexuality. Hannah Williams,16, was told that she couldn't bring her 15 year old girlfriend to the end of the year dance at Melbourne Ivanhoe because the ratio between boys/girls would be off. This was a a dance that was intended to have boys there because this was an all girls school and they where around girls all the time. The principal said this is an opportunity to enjoy "Boys". Her father Peter Williams filed an complaint but was unable to come to an resolution. So in the mean time he is trying to take this to a higher court saying this is unfair equal opportunity. Hannah has changed schools.

Pompeii's House of the Gladiators collapses

This is kind of a sad story, a 2,000 year old house that housed gladiators of ancient Rome collapsed. It was said to be the most archaeologically important houses in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. The House of the Gladiators was thought to have been used by combatants to train or relax before entering the nearby amphitheatre. it was said to collapse because of poor archeological dig in the 50's and recent heavy rains. However I believe this is going to have an impact on the economy of the city. Because "Pompeii, near Naples in the south of Italy, is one of the most important archaeological sites in the country -- it received 2.2 million visitors in the first 10 months of 2010 generating $23.8 million according to Varone."

This week I decided to go with something positive. I stumbled across this article on YAHOO News as I was looking on what to right this week.
This week South Africa will be publishing their first newspaper in Zulu a local language; Zulu is an important language in politics and commerce in South Africa. Zulu is the countries biggest ethnic group. A 32-page Zulu edition will be launched in the eastern Kwa-Zulu Natal province Sunday, The Sunday Times expects a circulation of more than 10,000 and hopes to expand.
This is going to a great resource for the people who speak Zulu to keep in touch and be heard in South Africa.

Cholrae Breakout

A Cholrae outbreak in Nigeria has killed over 1500 people. This has been the worst outbreak in recent years. Over 40, 000 people have been affected but so far only 1500 actually died. This is very sad because this is only one disease out of hundreds that are killing them.

What is the proper solution for this?

Death toll rises in the Philippines from Typhoon Megi

If you are not aware, there is a typhoon going on in southern Asia.

    On Tuesday, Megi carried sustained winds of about 104 mph off the coast of the Philippines in the South China Sea. With this being said the death toll has risen in this area. However you would be surprise that out of the 11 confirmed deaths that only 1 has been a drowning. The rest have been fallen trees or lightning related deaths.

    A huge concern is that the typhoon could approach Hong Kong and mainland China in the next few days. Megi could bring heavy rain to already-drenched areas such as Hainan and Vietnam, where state media said at least 20 people have died from recent flooding.

What do you think the effect will be on the economy of these Asian countries? Or could the US be affected by this typhoon?

Trapped Miners for ride to Freedom- After 2 months!

As I have kept up with the miners who are trapped in the mine shaft in San Jose Mine, Chile. The 33 miners have been trapped for about 2 months in the mine. Tuesday (10/12/10) the miners will be brought to the surface one by one in green overalls bearing their names on their chest; first the fittest, then the weakest, twisting in a steal cage that proven itself with four flawless test runs. No one knows the order in which the miners will be coming up in. The miners will be going straight to a medic to be examined immediately and if nothing is an emergency then they will be able to meet with their families. It will take each miner 20-45 mins to reach the surface.

What will be the reaction of the miners when they reach the surface and have to deal with family and media?

King Tut's grandfather still lives?

In Egypt a limestone portion of King Tut's grandfather was dug up. Scientists says Amenhotep III(Grandfather) was a very wealthy king and took on many projects. Only half of the statue was recovered, there is still a lot of digging that needs to be done.

It seems like every year new discoveries are being made. I think there are a lot of valuable items and information still out there that needs to be found. SO do you think there is more valuable things in Egypt to be discovered?
